On the initiative of the SEBOT Systematics Working Group, the 1st Citizen Science Biomaratón on Spanish flora has been organised for 21–23 May 2021, with the aim of promoting activities that highlight the role of plants in our society. It will coincide with International Fascination with Plants Day, an international event which, for several years now, has been generating knowledge in a fun and participatory way; in our case, it is aimed at highlighting Spain’s incredibly rich plant diversity.
Using photographs taken on mobile phones or other devices, and via the free iNaturalist app, the aim is to record as many observations as possible of plants – preferably wild ones – across the whole country. In some cities and universities, nature walks have even been organised so that people can take part as a group, guided by botanists and experts who will lead the “biomarathoners” and share their passion for plants with them.
