Spanish Botanical Society

A scientific society for botany enthusiasts

A federation for botany

A federation

for Botany

Why was sebot set up?

SEBOT It is the organisation that coordinates the leading scientific societies in the field of botany in Spain. On the one hand, it aims to fill the gap left by the absence of a multidisciplinary botanical society – something that has existed in neighbouring countries for over a century – whilst, at the same time, working together to meet the challenge of highlighting Spain’s plant diversity and the role plants play in human wellbeing. The federated societies are the Spanish Association of Aerobiology, the Association of Ibero-Macaronesian Herbariums, the Association of Spanish-Speaking Palynologists, the Spanish Society for Plant Conservation Biology, the Spanish Society for Bryology, the Spanish Society for Geobotany and the Society for Ethnobiology. Together, they have over 950 members, the majority of whom are university lecturers, researchers, government officials, students and botany enthusiasts, which has provided the federation with immense potential for action and outreach since its inception in 2019. Furthermore, recognising that several botanical groups do not have their own scientific society, the federation offers other botanists the opportunity to join this endeavour on an individual basis as affiliates, thereby enjoying virtually the same obligations and benefits as members of the federated associations.

News

Conferences

SEBOT organises the Spanish Botany Congress, a forum for presenting the latest advances in knowledge across the various disciplines related to plants. The first two editions took place in Toledo (2021) and Seville (2025), and the next will be held in Salamanca in 2027. In addition, SEBOT, together with the Royal Botanical Gardens of Madrid, organised the 20th International Botanical Congress in 2024 in Madrid, the world’s leading event in the sport, held every six years.

Activities

To ensure that words are followed by action, in addition to the activities organised by the six member societies and open to all members, other events are held, promoted by SEBOT’s working groups, such as symposia, seminars, cross-disciplinary courses, botanical workshops and camps, citizen science and public outreach events, etc.

International Scope

As well as raising the profile of our federation amongst the Spanish authorities, we wish to foster links with international botanical organisations and always keep our doors open to new Spanish botanical societies. SEBOT is involved in the process of establishing a European coordinating body for botanical societies.

Our objectives

SEVEN SPANISH SCIENTIFIC SOCIETIES RELATED TO BOTANY

To bring together the interests of the various scientific associations in the field of botany and to promote the advancement and dissemination of botanical science and culture, and their applications.

  • To promote the exchange of knowledge and experience through conferences, seminars and scientific meetings.
  • To disseminate scientific knowledge – both fundamental and applied – in the field of botany.
  • To promote activities that foster respect for and the conservation of biodiversity.
  • To engage in those social issues and debates where we can fulfil our role effectively.
  • To participate in international organisations and activities with a view to promoting knowledge of botany and carrying out tasks relating to international promotion and cooperation.
  • To engage other scientific societies and groups linked to botany in order to broaden the federation’s scope of action.
