The International Botanical Congress will be held in Madrid in 2024

Spain will host the 20th International Botanical Congress (IBC) from 21 to 27 July 2024. The bid, put forward jointly by the Spanish Botanical Society (SEBOT) and the Madrid Botanical Garden-CSIC, was invited by the International Association of Botanical and Mycological Societies to host the international congress with the longest tradition and the greatest appeal of all those held in the field of botany.

This is a major challenge that will test the ability of Spanish botanists to rise to the occasion. Undoubtedly, the creation of SEBOT has been crucial in gaining the trust of the IABMS, which was faced with the cancellation of the 2023 event in Rio de Janeiro due to Covid-related issues. Furthermore, the involvement of the Royal Botanical Garden-CSIC, the institution with the longest-standing tradition in Spanish botany, only served to strengthen the case for the bid submitted last year to host a future international congress.

The IBC brings together thousands of botanists from around the world, representing all disciplines related to plants and fungi (physiology, genetics, evolution, systematics, biogeography, palynology, geobotany, ecology, conservation, ethnobotany and many more) to present their latest research, network and promote the role of botany in our society. Organised around multiple concurrent symposia, the IBC hosts the Nomenclature Section as well as numerous thematic meetings of monographic working groups.

This will be the first time that the IBC has been held in southern Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, a global biodiversity “hotspot”, whose botanical attractions will form the focus of the numerous excursions and visits organised as part of the event.

Institutions of all kinds have already shown their strong support for the Spanish IBC, ranging from the General Secretariat for Research at the Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities, the presidency of the CSIC and Madrid City Council itself, not to mention numerous Spanish and international botanical societies.
